How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac

Convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac with Preview, or use a browser for small batches. Follow the export steps, choose JPEG quality and keep your original.

HEICJPG

You have a HEIC photo on your Mac, but an upload form or another person needs a JPG. For a single photo, the built-in Preview app is a direct place to start. You can also use PixMinto in a supported browser when you want a short batch workflow. Both methods create a separate JPEG copy.

Convert one HEIC to JPG using Preview

Use Export to write a new image file. Changing the filename alone does not convert the image. If double-clicking opens a different app, choose Preview from the file’s Open With menu.

  1. Open the HEIC photo in Preview.

  2. Choose File → Export.

  3. Open the Format menu and choose JPEG.

  4. Adjust quality if needed. Choose a new filename and a destination folder.

  5. Save the exported image, then open the JPG and check it before sharing.

Choose JPEG quality and check the exported file

Higher JPEG quality generally keeps more detail and produces a larger file. Lower quality may suit a small attachment, but can introduce visible artifacts around text, faces or fine edges. There is no single quality value that fits every photograph.

Check the copy at its intended viewing size. Make sure the image opens, the orientation is right and any upload limit is met. A JPG can be larger than the HEIC source, so compare the actual file sizes. Converting format and reducing pixel dimensions solve different problems.

Convert a small batch in your browser

PixMinto is an alternative when you want to queue a few HEIC photos and download separate JPGs. Image processing takes place on your device. The HEIC decoder loads only when needed; this workflow does not require a macOS app installation. Browser support and available device memory still matter.

  1. Open the HEIC to JPG tool. Try the sample HEIC first if you want to check this browser.

  2. Choose up to five HEIC or HEIF files, each at most 15 MiB and 40 megapixels.

  3. Leave JPG selected, adjust quality if needed and process the images.

  4. Compare the displayed source and output sizes and dimensions, then download each JPG.

Handle more than five photos in manageable batches

Put the source photos in a folder you can identify, then convert up to five at a time with PixMinto. Save the results to a separate destination folder and check each batch before selecting the next group. A repeated source filename can make downloads confusing, so keep track of which originals you have processed.

For a large photo library or an archival job, use a workflow suited to your volume and metadata requirements. PixMinto exports one still image per HEIC and does not preserve the original container’s extra images, EXIF or GPS. Its output is an 8-bit image, so HDR or wide-gamut appearance can change.

If a HEIC will not convert on your Mac

If Preview cannot open the source, keep the original and try exporting a JPEG from the photo app that can read it. A damaged or unsupported HEIF variant may fail in a browser as well; changing the extension will not repair it.

In PixMinto, a 48 MP image is above the 40 MP limit even when its file size is small. Export a reduced-resolution copy first. If a batch stalls, try one smaller file in an up-to-date browser and close other memory-heavy tabs.

If the problem is only that a website rejects HEIC, a readable JPEG copy is often the file you need. Check the site’s pixel dimensions and byte limit too; JPEG compatibility alone does not guarantee acceptance.

Keep the HEIC original alongside the JPG

Use the JPG copy for the upload or recipient that needs it. Keep HEIC for future edits, Live Photos and source metadata. Repeatedly converting or re-saving JPEG adds another lossy encoding step without restoring detail.

If your files came from an iPhone, changing its camera format affects future captures. It does not convert the HEIC photos already stored on your Mac. The general guide explains that distinction and links to Apple’s capture settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is JPEG in Preview the same as JPG?+

Yes. JPEG and JPG are two filename extensions for the same image format. Choose JPEG in Preview when a destination asks for JPG.

Do I need to install a converter on my Mac?+

Preview provides a built-in export method for files it can open. PixMinto offers a separate browser workflow; it does not require installing a desktop converter.

Can I just rename .heic to .jpg on Mac?+

No. A filename change leaves the HEIC encoding intact. Export JPEG data with Preview or a converter.

Will the browser version preserve EXIF and Live Photos?+

PixMinto exports one still image without EXIF or GPS metadata. Keep the original for metadata, Live Photos, HDR and future editing.
