A HEIC photo copied from an iPhone may not open in your usual Windows photo app. You can still try converting the file to JPG in a supported browser. This guide walks through PixMinto’s local conversion workflow and explains what to check when Windows asks for a HEIF or HEVC extension.
Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows in four steps
Use an up-to-date browser that supports the tool’s worker and canvas features. If you are unsure whether this PC can process your HEIC, start with the real sample image available on the tool.
Open the HEIC to JPG tool. Select Choose images and pick the HEIC or HEIF files copied to your PC.
Keep JPG as the output. Choose a quality setting; a lower setting can reduce bytes and fine detail.
Process the images. Check the displayed dimensions, output size and any error message for each file.
Download each JPG, open it from your browser’s download list or chosen folder, and confirm that it looks right.
Why Windows Photos may ask for a HEIF or HEVC extension
Opening a HEIC in a native Windows app depends on the codecs available to that app. Microsoft documents extension requirements for HEIF/HEVC content and links to the Microsoft Store. What is installed, offered or required can vary by Windows app and device.
Installing a decoder helps a compatible app read the source; it does not by itself turn every HEIC into JPG. If your installed editor can open the file and offers JPEG export, save a separate JPEG copy. Otherwise, use the browser method above or export a JPEG from the original photo app.
Microsoft: HEIF/HEVC extension requirements ↗Do you need a Windows codec for the browser method?
PixMinto loads its own HEIC decoder inside a browser worker when you process a HEIC. It does not ask Windows Photos to decode the original and does not require a conversion API account. Your selected images are processed in the browser rather than uploaded for conversion.
This does not guarantee that every browser or HEIF file will work. The tool needs enough memory and modern browser features. Try the sample, then one of your images. If native Windows software is a better fit for your job, follow that app’s own supported import and export workflow.
Convert several iPhone photos without mixing up files
PixMinto accepts up to five images per batch. Each input must be at most 15 MiB and 40 megapixels. For a larger group, keep the originals in one folder and save JPG copies in another; process a small batch, check the downloads, then continue.
A 48 MP iPhone image exceeds the pixel limit even if it is under 15 MiB. Export a smaller-resolution copy from a photo app first. A file extension such as .HEIC or .HEIF does not tell you the pixel count, and file size alone does not predict decoding memory.
Check JPG quality, file size and metadata
JPG is a lossy format. Compare faces, text and fine textures after conversion, especially when using a lower quality setting. A JPG can be larger than the original HEIC because the formats encode images differently. If an upload has a byte limit, check the result against that limit.
PixMinto exports one still image and does not copy EXIF or GPS metadata. Output is 8-bit; HDR and wide-gamut color can look different. Keep the source for archival use, Live Photos and future editing. Converting a file cannot recover details that were already lost.
If the file fails or the downloaded JPG is missing
Read the per-file error first. Reduce the batch to one image, check the size and pixel limits, and try a readable source copy. A corrupt HEIC may fail in both a desktop app and a browser. Renaming it to .jpg will not fix the encoding.
For a completed result, use its Download button. Find the saved copy through your browser’s download list and open it before deleting or moving anything. If your browser asks where to save files, choose a destination you can find again.
For a sensitive photo, keep the original and confirm the workflow you use matches your requirements. PixMinto’s conversion stays on the device, but the resulting JPG intentionally omits source metadata and is not an archival replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows without installing an app?+
You can try PixMinto in a supported browser. Its decoder loads when needed and processes selected images on the device. Use the sample first to check this browser.
Does installing HEIF Image Extensions automatically create JPG files?+
No. Decoding and exporting are separate steps. An extension can help a compatible app read HEIF; a converter or JPEG export creates the JPG copy.
Can I rename a HEIC file to JPG in File Explorer?+
No. Renaming changes the filename rather than the image data. Convert or export the image as JPEG.
Will my JPG always be smaller?+
No. File size depends on the source, quality, dimensions and encoder. Check the displayed result; format conversion is not a guarantee of compression.
