How to convert JPG to WebP

Make a WebP copy of a JPG in your browser. Choose quality, compare file size and detail, and check that your website or upload accepts the new format.

You want a WebP version of a photograph for a website or another destination that supports it. Create a copy from the best source JPG available, then compare the exported image. Conversion may reduce bytes, but it cannot restore detail already lost in the original JPEG.

Convert a JPG to WebP in three steps

The preset fixes the output format to WebP. It accepts JPEG images with JPG or JPEG filenames when the browser identifies them as JPEG.

  1. Choose up to five JPG/JPEG images within the 15 MiB and 40-megapixel limits.

  2. Choose a quality setting and process the files. Dimensions remain unchanged.

  3. Compare the original and result, download the WebP and test it in the destination.

Choose quality using the actual photograph

A lower quality setting can reduce bytes but may affect fine detail and smooth gradients. Check faces, hair, foliage and edges at the intended display size. A high setting does not turn the export into a recovered original.

Start with the best original JPG you have and avoid repeated JPG-to-WebP-to-JPG cycles. Each lossy export can add changes.

Check the website’s format and dimensions

WebP is designed for web images and supports lossy encoding. Your publishing system still needs to accept the file. A particular theme, app or upload form can impose its own rules.

If the page only needs a 600-pixel-wide photo, converting a much larger source keeps unnecessary pixels. Resize to an appropriate maximum width separately, then check the final output. A format change alone does not change display dimensions.

Measure the saving instead of assuming one

The file size depends on source detail, dimensions, encoder and quality. The WebP output can be larger than an already optimized JPEG. PixMinto’s explicit preset reports the result rather than promising a percentage reduction.

If your only goal is a smaller file and either format is acceptable, the compressor’s Auto option can compare candidates. If the destination requires WebP, use the preset and inspect the tradeoff.

Frequently asked questions

Are JPG and JPEG both accepted?+

Yes, when the selected file is identified as an image/jpeg input. They are filename extensions for the same format.

Does converting JPG to WebP add transparency?+

No. A JPEG source has no alpha channel, and conversion does not remove its background.

Will my website load faster automatically?+

A smaller image can reduce the bytes transferred, but page performance also depends on dimensions, delivery, caching and the rest of the site. Test the published page.
