About this tool: Compress image to 500 KB

Choose this preset for a destination with a 500 KB maximum. It provides a larger byte budget than the 100 KB and 200 KB presets, which can help retain more detail for the same source. The actual result still depends on the photograph and the dimensions.

How to compress an image to 500 KB

  1. Choose up to five JPG / PNG / WebP images, each within 15 MiB and 40 megapixels.
  2. 500 KB = 500,000 bytes. Automatic quality; dimensions may shrink. JPG output.
  3. Process the image, compare the result dimensions and file size, then download a separate copy. Keep the original.

When to use this tool

Use a 500,000-byte maximum when that is the destination’s permitted budget. The preset searches JPG quality and only reduces dimensions when quality changes alone cannot meet the cap.

Check before downloading

This does not enforce a minimum size or guarantee a file of exactly 500 KB. A sufficiently small JPG can remain byte-identical to the source, including its metadata. Check the actual dimensions and privacy needs before sharing.

A few things you might wonder.

Does this guarantee acceptance by an upload form?

No. Check the form’s required type, minimum and maximum size, pixel dimensions and aspect ratio as well.

Is 500 KB the same as 512,000 bytes?

This preset uses decimal KB: 500,000 bytes. Other interfaces may display rounded or binary-based values.

Can the tool enlarge a tiny file to 500 KB?

No. It limits the maximum; it does not add padding or enforce a minimum size.
